Safety
In March, 2005, UMEC - Arizona worked 1 Million Man Hours without a lost time accident. This achievement was only made possible through a concentrated and coordinated effort on behalf of all the UMEC people in the implementation and operation of the ZERO Accident Program (ZAP).
During 2004, University Mechanical achieved an OSHA Recordable Incident Rate below 1 in an industry where the average is above 8.
"It's not about the numbers, though. It's about everyone going home to their families every night injury- and illness-free" says Executive Vice President Brad Thornton. "The numbers are simply a reflection of the cumulative effort on the part of each and every individual who makes the decision to behave safely and responsibly in the work place. It's about watching out for each other and those we work alongside of."
A strong safety performance goes hand-in-hand with an environment that embraces safety. At the center is a safety program that is supported by rigorous assessment, communication, training, leading indicator and root cause analysis, consistency, and dedicated execution.
Integral to the success of the program is pre-task planning. University's field and management personnel start each new job task by writing their own University Safety Plan that identifies potential hazards inherent in the performance of that task. Armed with this knowledge and top-of-mind awareness, field personnel are prepared to execute their work plan properly, in a manner that anticipates and avoids unsafe situations.
