Phelps Dodge
Phoeniz, Arizona

A global leader in mining and manufacturing industries, Phelps Dodge Corp. employs 17,500 people in 28 countries. The company has always called Phoenix home, but with recent acquisition of Cyprus Amax Mineral Co. and the stated objective of aggressive growth, "home" just isn't big enough anymore.

Enter Ryan Cos. US, which is bringing online a new 24-story high-rise in the original geographic center of the city of Phoenix, with the building's top six floors to be dedicated to Phelps Dodge's world headquarters. Another nine floors will be available for lease by other tenants, while eight floors will be dedicated to parking, and one will house retail shops and restaurant facilities.

University is installing nearly 17,000 feet of pipe and 300-plus plumbing fixtures in the 517,000-square-foot building. In order to install 2,5000-gallon grease interceptor on a building floor located 40 feet below ground zero, crews will pump equipment from the ground level down through a series of sleeves and guides.

The Phelps Dodge Team:
Owner/builder: Ryan Cos. US
Architect: SHG/SW
Prime mechanical design-build contractor: University Mechanical & Engineering Contractors
