Showcase Projects
San Diego Museum of Art
"Palace of Gold & Light: Treasures from the Topkapi," at the San Diego Museum of Art, was a special exhibition of more than 200 objects from the center of one of the world's most powerful and sophisticated empires. "Norman Rockwell: Pictures for the American People," which will run through Dec. 31, features works by America's single most popular artist, illustrator, and icon-maker. True crowd-pleasers, these exhibitions have kept hundreds of visitors streaming through the museum's galleries every day - even as the University team members who are upgrading the museum’s air conditioning and humidification control systems have been hard at work.
The project, which is just days from completion, has entailed three phases. For each phase, we've tied in temporary ductwork to provide temperature and humidity control for several individual galleries while we've demolished existing air handlers, chillers, ductwork, and piping. With the old equipment removed, we’ve brought in the new chillers and air handlers piece by piece, assembling them in place, and starting up and testing them. Our last step for each phase has been to shut down the temporary equipment and tie in the new, permanent equipment.
Once the project is completed, the San Diego Museum of Art will have a state-of-the-art
electronic control system to monitor temperature and humidity, not only for the comfort of the museum's visitors, but for the preservation of its nationally renowned collection of art.
