Salt River Project
Glendale, AZ
With California’s electricity crisis grabbing headlines throughout the country, energy generators and providers in neighboring states are facing daunting challenges. One of Arizona's largest utilities, the Salt River Project, is meeting the challenges head on with an aggressive, multi-faceted plan of action to ensure that its customers will not be impacted by the power shortages and sudden price increases that California consumers have experienced.
Recently SRP tapped University for a prototype installation at its Agua Fria generating station in Glendale. Teaming with Solar Turbines - respected worldwide as a supplier of gas turbines that are designed for robustness, efficiency, durability, and high reliability - our Arizona Division furnished and installed a five-megawatt gas-fired turbine generator that is fully portable. Mounted on trailers, the generator can be easily disassembled, transported, and reassembled at another site if additional power is needed elsewhere.
Because SRP had never before utilized a portable generator, the design and installation team was challenged to fine-tune the process and work out various problems as they arose. Installing or moving similar units in the future will be a smooth, efficient operation thanks to those who completed the prototype project.
