Grossmont Hospital
San Diego, CA

When emergency room doctors hear "Code 3," they know it means it's time to hustle. We know just how they feel. University crews have a scant 14 months to complete work on a 170,000-square-foot addition to Sharp HealthCare's Grossmont Hospital.

The largest and most comprehensive health care facility in San Diego's East County, with a service area covering 750 square miles, Grossmont Hospital is about to have a new, state-of-the-art Emergency and Critical Care Center, while at the same time allowing for its old emergency room to be converted into an expanded radiology department. For the new addition, University is installing all of the HVAC, plumbing, and piping systems.

Maintaining a fast pace isn't the only challenge on this job. We also must accommodate the fact that there is no lay-down area on the site; the footprint of the new building consumes all of the available land. This means we must transport all of our material and manpower from an area that is 1.5 miles from the job itself - with no air in the schedule.

The Grossmont Hospital Team:
General contractor: Sundt Construction
Mechanical engineer: Randall Lamb
Mechanical contractor: University Mechanical & Engineering Contractors
University project manager: Brian Roberson
HVAC supervisor: Dennis Brown
Plumbing supervisor: Neil Gagian
Piping supervisor: Eric Dunlavey
Project coordinator: Erica Lehr
