University of California, San Diego - School of Medicine
The UCSD School of Medicine is ranked among the nation's top 10 medical schools in biomedical research, with 400-plus faculty members involved in laboratory or clinical research. In December 2003, the School of Medicine will have a new molecular biology research facility to accommodate the research efforts of five departments: Pharmacy, Neuroscience, Reproductive Medicine, Pediatrics, and Medicine.
The new building is under construction on the UCSD campus near two other School of Medicine facilities. When complete, it will house laboratories and office space, as well as facilities for the research program's small animals. The mechanical systems being installed by University will meet the standards for lab-intensive facilities, featuring specialized environments to accommodate fume hoods and air conditioning throughout the building. The heart of the building systems will be an 8,000-square-foot mechanical room.
Performing our work with minimum impact on the busy campus' students and faculty is a daily challenge, especially since the jobsite is wedged between the existing Basic Sciences Building and the Cellular and Molecular Medicine East facility. From small concerns such as locating parking to major efforts such as delivering and installing 20-ton air handling units, University crews are mastering complex logistics hour by hour.
We've had a lot of practice in mastering these kinds of challenges, though. In the past three decades, University has completed numerous projects at UCSD, including the original construction of the Basic Science Building in 1977, the Molecular Biology Building, the Clinical Science Building, the Bookstore, Engineering Buildings 1 and 2, Warren College, Eleanor Roosevelt College, and the Cogeneration Facility.
