Goodrich Aerostructures
Chula Vista, CA
Operating as a "Lean Enterprise" is the norm at the Goodrich Aerostructures Group. The company is totally committed to "Lean Manufacturing," a systematic and structured approach to the elimination of waste within the production system.
With this high-level dedication to the "Least Waste Way," it's no surprise that Goodrich Aerostructures will soon be operating its own 9.3 mw cogeneration facility at its manufacturing facility in Chula Vista, Calif. - and it's no surprise that Goodrich is relying on EMCOR's bundled services for completion of the design-build, turnkey project.
Four EMCOR companies are functioning as a single, seamless entity to deliver a dual-fuel power generating facility that will utilize 98.5 percent natural gas and 1.5 percent diesel fuel and will be one of only a few such facilities in the country.
Intricate phasing of mechanical and electrical work, along with coordination with an existing chemical plating line, is required during the new system's installation. On the mechanical side, University is installing three 3.1 mw reciprocating generator sets as the primary power generating equipment, with the waste heat from the engines providing 256 gpm of process hot water to the Goodrich plant's primary process hot water loop. The challenge is to complete this construction while all the existing systems remain online.
Electrically, the installation requires adding switchgear and controls to inter-tie the generated power into the existing switching.
The cogeneration equipment will be housed in a newly constructed building designed by EMCOR to fully integrate with the existing plant architecture. Located at the heart of the plant, the new facility is being built on the same spot where a previous cogeneration facility was constructed and operated by University for Rohr (Goodrich's predecessor) in the mid-1980s.
