Qwest Communications

Showcase Projects
Qwest Communications
San Diego, CA

When Qwest Communications needed to convert an existing San Diego warehouse into a telecom facility, it turned to Emcor Technology Group for the full range of design-build mechanical expertise. University teamed with our sister company, Marelich Mechanical, to provide seamless services to Qwest under the Emcor umbrella. Another sister company, Dynalectric, provided electrical contracting services for the project.

We engineered and installed a new heating, ventilating, and air conditioning system, as well as plumbing, for approximately 30,000 square feet of space that is home to Qwest's vast array of electronics equipment used to provide secure broadband Internet-based data, voice, and image communications for both businesses and consumers.

Because reliability is a Qwest trademark, our design provided for an N+1 level of redundancy. Where the space required only one chiller, for example, we installed two.

As with many such projects, this one's original start date was delayed for nearly six weeks - but the completion date remained cast in concrete. Thanks to long hours of hard work by everyone involved, expedited equipment and materials deliveries, and the benefits of the design-build method of project delivery, the University team was able to shave the required six weeks off the schedule to meet the immovable deadline.

The Qwest Communications Team:
Mechanical engineer: Marelich Mechanical
Installing mechanical contractor: University Mechanical & Engineering Contractors
Project manager: Rod Foley
Piping foreman: Sig Golden
Plumbing foreman: Jim Taylor
Sheet metal foreman: Keith Sweepe
